How much for my car? Using machine learning to find out

Intro I own a wonderful Ford Fiesta ST-3 (2017, 7th generation, 38k miles), but since moving to London, she’s been sat at my parents’ house. I finally accepted it’s best to sell her. But how much should I ask? Let’s do some data analysis and machine learning! The JupyterLab notebook, extractor script, and data, is available on Github: https://github.com/jamesdeluk/data-projects/tree/main/car-price-regression-modelling Gather the data Auto Trader makes it difficult to scrape data - the page is loaded dynamically, and has robots.txt etc to restrict bots, so I couldn’t find an online tool that worked. They do provide an API, but that’s only for industry, and likely costs a pretty penny.

Innovating Aston Martin

I’ve always loved Aston Martin. Their cars are quintessentially British; six different models have featured in the James Bond movies, with the DB5 starring in eight different Bond films. Established in 110 years ago in 1913, they’re on the of the few remaining British automotive manufacturers. They’re beautiful, they sound amazing, and they have an incredibly heritage. However, as a company, they’re not doing that well. They listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2018 at a market cap of ~$5bn; by 2020 it had dropped to <$1bn, up to ~$4bn in 2021, down to ~$0.5bn in 2022, before recovering to ~$3.5bn in 2023. Currently, in Q4 2023, it sits at ~$2.5bn. In other words, the value of the company has varied dramatically since it IPO’d, and the overall trend is fairly negative.

Something I threw together for a bit of fun. What if the car brand Lotus wanted to expand into a new market? The PPTX deck can be found here.

Do I Need to Own a Car? And the Future of Mobility.

I love cars - always have. I’ve been driving tractors as long as I remember. I got my driving licence within three months of when I was legally able to. And this love has expanded into motorbikes, when I first left the rain of the UK and experienced the joys of the Australian mountain roads. Currently I own a car (Fiesta ST) and motorbike (Yamaha Fazer) However, soon I move back to London. I’m incredibly excited for the move - it’s been years since I lived in the city. But with it comes a complication, though - what to do about my wheels?
